The people of Ukraine are remarkable people.
Though they have been through many difficulties,
each time they have emerged stronger.
Let’s join them with prayers,
with aid, and with determination
to see them rise up victorious once more.
Today Destruction Stands
Where Just Recently Stood Peace and Tranquility
During the 1930’s a famine hit parts of the Soviet Union. Russian president Joseph Stalin deprived the Ukrainians of food, though their crops were some of the greatest. The harvested crops were sent to Russia, and between 5 and 8 million Ukrainians died of starvation.
During the 1930’s
Great rejoicing came when the Soviet Union broke up in 1991.
In 1992 Ukraine voted overwhelmingly to be an independent nation.
Good times were ahead!
As the Ukrainians began to shape their own destiny, the strong hand of Putin tried to manipulate control. He would make certain that his leadership choice would be at the top. In the winter of 2013-2014 the people rose up against the Moscow-leaning president and through demonstrations he finally left for Russia. Maidan will go down in history as one of the most dramatic moments of change brought by the people.
